Some domains you buy for a product. Others you buy for a destination.
Shopify's shopping app, Shop, has moved its web experience from shop.app to shop.com. On paper, that's a URL change. Nothing breaks, and you don't need to do anything.
But it's worth a closer look at what Shop has become.
What's changing
Since September 29, Shop on the web lives at shop.com instead of shop.app.
- Old links still work. Anything pointing to shop.app redirects to shop.com automatically.
- Your store is unaffected. Products, settings and your Shop channel carry over exactly as they are.
- Updating links is optional. If you've linked to shop.app in social bios, ads or email templates, you can switch to shop.com whenever it suits you.
That's the whole change. If you only read this far, you're covered.
Why this matters more than it looks
For most of its life, Shop was the app customers used to track their parcels. Useful, but not where anyone went to shop.
That's changing. Shop is now a place for customers to discover stores and products, buy with Shop Pay, and earn Shop Cash. And since late 2025, it runs on the Shopify Catalog. That means every active product in your online store can now be found in Shop (as long as your store meets Shop's merchant guidelines), as well as in other AI-powered shopping experiences.
Products you've published to the Shop channel can be bought directly inside Shop. Other active products still show up, but the customer completes the purchase on your own store.
A .com address is what you choose when you want people to type it, remember it and come back. It fits a shopping destination, not a tracking tool.
What we'd check now
Update your links when it's convenient. No rush, but there's no reason to rely on a redirect forever. Social bios, paid ads and any email or SMS templates that mention Shop are the usual places.
Look at how your store appears in Shop. Open shop.com and find your own store. Check your logo, cover image, product images and descriptions. If customers can discover you there, it should look like your brand, not a default listing.
Treat your product data as storefront content. Because Shop pulls from the Shopify Catalog, your product titles, descriptions, images and variants are now shown in places you don't design yourself. Clear titles, complete variant data and good imagery matter more than ever.
Decide which products to sell directly in Shop. Review what you've published to the Shop channel. Some brands want the full catalog available. Others prefer to keep certain products, like made-to-order or high-consideration items, as discovery only and send customers to their own store to buy.
Our take
This is a small change with a clear signal. Shop is becoming one of the places your customers discover brands, and Shopify is clearly building it for AI shopping assistants too.
For Nordic brands, Shop is already available in Swedish, Danish, Norwegian and Finnish. The brands that benefit will be the ones whose product data is complete and well written enough to stand on its own, wherever a customer finds it.
If you're unsure whether your catalog is ready to be shown outside your own storefront, send us a link to your store. We'll tell you where your product data would hold up and where it would fall short.
